Hello everyone, my name is Mikayla Murphy and I am from Boston Massachuetts, USA. I have always had the dream of studying abroad in Australia and USC made that possible. Throughout my semester here I have met amazing people, taken interesting classes and gotten to travel the world. Taking this trifecta, I have been able to grow myself as a student and as an individual throughout these past months. USC is a great school to study abroad at because they allow you to truly immerse yourself in the Aussie culture by allowing you to live and take classes with the normal USC students, not just other abroad students. This has definitely had a major impact on my experience considering I have friends from all over the world, including, Australia, Germany, USA, Tasmania and Sweden. Along with that, USC makes it an easy transition to their lifestyle and learning style by hosting multiple orientations and international student events at the beginning of the semester. This allows you to meet a lot of people, explore the surrounding town and try new things.
For the academics at USC, it is super easy to transition from your normal studies at home. They have the multiple centres where you can go for extra help on assignments, language barriers and even mental and physical health concerns. The lecturers and tutors are always more than willing to help and meet with you out of class in order for you to get the most out of your experience and the native students are always more than willing to help with directions or miscommunications! If you are putting in the effort and willing to try your best you should have a seamless transition into USC academic schedule and be able to thrive in this environment.
Lastly, if you are interested in travelling, it is definitely the place for you. Being just one hour from Brisbane international airport, you are able to travel wherever your heart desires. I have been to Fiji, Bali Indonesia and South Island New Zealand in just three months. Being able to travel is a passion of mine and being able to see the destinations on this side of the world has been absolutely breath taking. Whether it was zip-lining in Fiji, white water rafting in Bali, bungee jumping in New Zealand, or skydiving in Australia itself, the fun and adrenaline never have to stop. There is also plenty to see in Australia that the school is a central location for. You are just 20 minutes away from Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo, 15 minutes from Mooloolaba Beach, 45 minutes from Noosa Heads National Park, an hour from Bribie Island and many other beautiful places to explore.
This has been an experience of a lifetime that has helped change who I used to be and shape who I am going to become. If you want to find yourself, explore the world and have the adventure of a lifetime, USC is the place for you.
