Vanessa, Theresia and Susanne from HS Coburg studying at USC
Hey from Down Under
We are four students of the University of applied Sciences in Coburg (Germany) and more than happy to share our experiences with you. All of us have completed our semester abroad at the University of the Sunshine Coast in beautiful Australia. Back home in Germany, we attend a Master of Business Administration program, which includes the great opportunity to achieve a double degree (Master of Business and Master of Management) with USC Sunshine Coast in only one semester. This is why we decided to come here.
So, if you plan to apply for one of the programs at USC, we are pretty sure our following tips will help you to organise your adventure down under.
At the beginning of the winter semester 2017/2018 we started to plan our application for our semester abroad in Australia. We had previously attended the information events on the topic of semesters abroad and found the combination with the double degree most attractive.
The application documents are processed by the International Office of Coburg University of Applied Sciences on the one hand and by the office of the Australian university on the other. You will need to complete an application form, your official academic transcript and proof of English language skills. You should also talk to your home university which courses you should study as you will receive credit transfer at USC, just to make sure, that you won’t have any issues regarding your course enrolment. Moreover, we organised the application for the visa, booked our flights and organised a health insurance. All went smoothly so nothing stood in the way of our semester abroad.
Two of us have decided to find our own accommodation close to the beach. Easier said than done but the search was worth it. We were allowed to spend the time in a dreamlike beach house in a small village about 15 minutes away from the university with a good public connection and shopping possibilities.
The rest of us chose the student residence “Varsity”. A decision we definitely do not regret. The walk to the university is very short, which gave us a lot of flexibility to arrange our studies. Due to our living situation we were able to establish numerous international contacts and friendships beyond our Master’s degree.
Course of study
The USC campus has several buildings, all equipped with very modern facilities, a brasserie and several comfy cafes – Coop is our favourite. 🙂
The Master program itself is very different from the German system, as work has to be done continuously during the whole semester. In view of our double degree, we were given a total of four courses, which are feasible in content but of course required individual effort. Therefore, you should consider a good time management.
Everyday life and leisure
Our days were in general determined by our studies. Nevertheless, we used the remaining free time to enjoy the beaches, cafes and the surroundings. The Sunshine Coast is the perfect place for nature lovers and those who want to enjoy the city life can simply take the next train to Brisbane. If you have the chance to spend some more time in Australia, you should definitely plan some trips before or after your studies; Down Under has a lot to offer.
All in all, we can only say that we are happy to have seized this opportunity and Australia is never a goodbye, it is just a “see you soon”.
