What an incredible, daunting, exciting step it is to study abroad. I am currently studying at the University of Mississippi, in the United States. In the short month I have been here, it has proved to be one of the best decisions I have made. I have learnt so much about myself, learnt so much about other cultures and made lifelong friends. You get to experience all aspects of American culture, from the different lingo, to becoming a sports fanatic and eating the truly local Southern cuisine (aka catfish or deer sausage). There is nothing else that compares to this experience.
Ole Miss is a university that you cannot help but fall in love with. As soon as you walk onto campus, you are mesmerised and feel like you are in an historical movie setting, where everywhere you look, there is a piece of history, from the class settings, to the buildings, to the traditions carried out through the campus. Ole Miss is known for its outstanding campus.
They are crazy about their football, and who can blame them, it is great . The first football game experience cannot be described in words. It is one of those things you just have to experience. It starts hours before with tailgating, which is what the students live for. It is one of the highlights of football season. People from all groups set up tents, in which you can expect good deep fried American food, great company and just a whole bunch of fun. There is a thing called “game day fashion” when attending Ole Miss. Your closest increases in colours of blue and red drastically within the first few weeks of being here. Seeing the football players walk through the Walk of Champions is one of the most surreal experiences about being at Ole Miss – it is what you come to experience, with the addition of the cheerleaders, marching bands and drum lines. The college chant “Are You Ready” never ends with a yes or no answer, yet is followed with a chorus of “Hell yeah! Damn Right! Hotty Toddy, Gosh almighty, Who the hell are we? Hey! Flim Flam, Bim Bam, Ole Miss, By Damn.”
Ole Miss, By Damn!” . It never fails in a stadium of thousands.
My short time abroad has taught to take every opportunity that is presented, even if it is one of the scariest things you do – you will never regret it and will always learn something you never knew you were capable of. Just do it! You will never look back with regrets. You gain so much from an experience like this, from meeting new friends, learning new cultures and seeing a piece of the world you have never seen before, living life as a local. You soon start to feel right at home. Even though I have only been here for a short time, Ole Miss will always have a piece of my heart.
Hotty Toddy Y’all,
