In February 2014 I was lucky enough to travel to Borneo, Malaysia with three other students for 10 days. The USC International department helped fund my trip where we worked in conjunction with the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre.
Before heading to the Sun Bear Centre we spent a couple of nights in a nature lodge along the Kinabatangan River. The sunsets were amazing and being out on a boat along the river we got to see animals in their wild habitats. The staff at the lodge were very friendly and always made lots of food for the guests.
After experiencing the animals in the wild we headed to Sepilok where we were working with the Sun Bear Centre to launch a new Sun Bear adoption program. As marketing and PR students it was a wonderful experience for us. We raised money in Australia before we left by holding a documentary screening and also over in Borneo where we held a similar event. Overall we raised $1261for the centre. The launch of the adoption program was also successful and we met some great people along the way.
The Sun Bears are adorable and we could sit and watch them climb trees for hours. We were lucky enough to walk the perimeter of the centre and throw food over the fences for the Bears to enjoy. The centre was located next to the Orang-utan Centre so we also got to see the Orang-utans around a lot which was great.
It was an amazing experience! Met some new people, formed some great friendships and learnt a lot about PR, marketing, Sun Bears and the Malaysian culture.
